What pray tell is the infamous Red Ring of Death? If you own the Microsoft Xbox 360, you might have actually experienced it yourself. On the front of the console, there is a power button. Centered on the power switch is a series of red indicators. If you switch on your machine, and the red indicators start to blink, you're a victim of the red ring of death.

When Microsoft created the Xbox 360, they decided to use an innovative way of mounting the heat sinks to the motherboard. Under regular operation, the temperature within the case is very hot, and this can easily cause the mainboard to buckle, and it is this buckling which results in solder joints connecting the processor to the board to come away. The fault is indicated by those famous three red indicators. The more modern Xbox 360 Elite was designed slightly better and should not suffer from this problem.

What some have done to prevent this situation is make sure the Xbox is properly ventilated. If you have cats or any other source of dust in your home, it doesn't take long for the vents on your console to start getting clogged. Simply by vacuuming the vents and removing the overload of dust, you can go a long way to prevent overheating. You can also ensure that there is enough clearance around the Xbox and that you don't store it on its side and put items on top of it.

You might think about operating a fan that constantly blows on your Xbox during operation. There are some mini fans that you can even mount on the ventilation holes to make it easier to cool the Xbox down. Experiment with operating the fan in one direction or another to find out what does the best job. Sucking the hot air out works better than forcing cool air in.

Sometimes it takes more than just fixing the ventilation of your Xbox to solve the red ring of death situation. You might actually have to crack open the unit and make a few corrections. If this is the case, you will need a good guide to repairing the Xbox 360, as it is a delicate piece of equipment and easily broken if you don't know what you are doing. If you think you have the skill to repair electronic things yourself, and you have used a soldering iron, there are quite a few of manuals available out there. They mainly involve adjusting the method the processors are cooled.
